Removable Dentures that are Comfortable
Removable dentures have come a long way, becoming much more affordable, more comfortable, and more natural-looking than your parents’ dentures. Perhaps best of all is you don't have to make a choice, you can have a denture that is both removable and fixed. Regardless, we love creating removable dentures that our patients can be happy with for a very long time. If you keep reading, you will become much more educated about your options and, what to expect.
Temporary Dentures (aka Immediate Dentures or Transitional Dentures)
These are removable dentures. The day you have teeth pulled in preparation for implants or dentures, you can immediately start using temporary dentures, while you wait for healing to be completer or your long-term permanent dentures to be finished. These are good to have on hand for the future as well. Consider them as "backups" in the event you accidentally damage your permanent removable dentures.
Permanent Dentures
The word permanent does not imply that they are fixed with implants. These are always removable and applied over the top of gums with adhesive. The term “permanent” is used only to differentiate them from temporary dentures.
Economy Dentures
Economy dentures are only removable and can be bought “off-the-shelf.” They are the most unnatural looking and the least comfortable, but they are the most affordable. Like finding a new pair of shoes a Prosthodontist will work with you to determine which economy denture feels and works best. These require denture adhesive.
Fixed Dentures for Every Budget
Fixed dentures can be fixed to natural roots or teeth or implants. Not going the implant route is potentially a great option if you don’t want to undergo surgery. Or feel stuck between not wanting removable dentures and not able to pay for fixed dentures. If this is you, schedule an appointment. You may be surprised to find there is a middle ground. Including a less invasive implant option, where you can satisfy the quality you want at a price-point you can live with.
Overdentures (Implant Supported Dentures)
Overdentures are dentures placed over and fixed into place by implants. They are always fixed, but can also be removable. For example, Snap-in Dentures are overdentures that can snap on and off implants. Even a single false tooth, embedded into a false gum, then fixed to an implant and abutment is an overdenture. Most people today call overdentures: “implant supported dentures,” “implant retained dentures,” “all on four dentures,” or "all on six dentures.” Wherever there is an implant, there will always be a denture placed "over it."
Dental Implants that Can Last a Lifetime
Dental implants--or prosthetic roots--can mean a complete renewal of the function that was lost due to missing or infected roots. The traditional solution has been to get a root canal, but today the gap between the cost of implant surgery and a root canal has closed considerably. Trading up to a one-piece zirconia implant or a titanium implant and abutment makes more sense than ever. The result can be better long-term health, and an investment more likely to last a lifetime. The idea is to skip paying for the root canal and an implant later and pay only for the implant.
You have many options. Make sure you ask your Natural Fit Prosthodontist about ways to convert a removable denture into a implant-supported one. With as few as two less-expensive and less-invasive mini dental implants (MDIs), you can upgrade from a removable to a supported denture, improving your quality of life significantly, and putting yourself in a position to upgrade to something even more solid later on, when life permits.

Full Dentures
Also known as a “full arch,” a full denture is a set of 10, 12 or 14 false teeth for the upper or lower jaw. Full Dentures include the top and bottom; encompassing all 20, 24 or 28 prosthetic teeth.
Upper Dentures
Any size denture with any number of teeth that replaces missing teeth on your upper jaw is an upper denture.
Lower Dentures
Any size denture replacing any number of missing teeth on your lower jaw is a lower denture.
Partial Dentures
Partial dentures describe any denture that has less than 20 crowns. And while not common, it is still accurate to call even a single prosthetic tooth, a partial denture.
Prosthetic Gums
Prosthetic gums may be required for strength and aesthetics. Most full arch dentures placed on implants have a titanium bridge, and the gums hide the bar. Like a common dental bridge spans a single tooth, full dentures need a bridge between implants for strength. Therefore artificial gums become a requirement for aesthetic reasons. A solid Zirconia bridge shown above is the only exception.
And for removable dentures it is the artificial gums that cup the gums that no long have teeth. So the gums are critical in nearly all cases, and we take great care to ensure the comfort, color and look of your prosthetic gums look as natural and real as your actual gums. The same level of care that give crowns.
Custom Denture Options
No two dentures are exactly alike. From that perspective, every denture is custom made, with your mouth and situation, along with the expertise of a denture specialist largely dictating what your final denture will look like. However there are customizations that are clear improvements that will make being a denture wearer more enjoyable. During your free introductory consultation, make sure you speak with your prosthodontist about different materials that can be used for the teeth and gums. The Prosthodontist will walk you through as many of these materials as you like and their related pros and cons.
With so many types of dentures, it can be confusing. The fastest and easiest way to sift through the confusion is to schedule a free consultation with a prosthodontist, and he will talk you through the pros and cons of each. If you want to understand a little more before your visit, read further.
